1、與 age, shape, size, colour, height, design, weight 等名詞連用，可用作表語或定語;其中的介詞 of 有時可省略。如：
The two boys are (of) the same height. 這兩個男孩一樣高。
Here is a piece of wood (of) the right size. 這有一塊木頭，其大小剛好適合。
When I was (of) your age, I lived in the country. 我像你這個年紀的時候，我住在鄉下。
2、 與某些名詞(如help, value, interest, importance等)連用，相當於形容詞，可用作定語或表語。如：
It’s not of much value. 這沒有多大價值。
This subject is of great interest to me. 這門學科對我來説是很有趣的。
The dictionary is of much help to the students. 這本字典對學生幫助很大。
3、與 hear, talk, know, speak 等動詞連用，表示一種間接性，大意為“涉及到”。如：
I’ve never heard of anyone doing a thing like that. 我從未聽説有人做過那種事。
Mary is talking of looking for another job. 瑪麗説起要另找一份工作。
I don’t know the writer, but I know of him. 我不認識這個作家，但我聽説過他。
People spoke of their fear as the flood waters rose. 人們説起看到洪水上漲時的'恐懼。
4、 與表示動作的名詞或動名詞連用，表示動賓關係。如：
The writing of the letter took me three hours. 寫這封信花了我3個小時。
Loss of health is worse than loss of wealth. 失去財富比失去健康更糟。
5、表示比較範圍，意為“在……當中”。如:
Of all the choices, this is the best. 在所有選擇中，這種最好。
Of the two coats, the black one is the better. 在這兩件外套中，這件黑色的更好些。
6、 與 careless, clever, cruel, foolish, friendly, generous, good, impolite, kind, nice, polite, right, rude, selfish, silly, stupid, wise, wrong等表示人的品行和特點的形容詞連用，用於 It’s+adj.+of sb (to do sth) 句型。如：
It was kind of him to wait. 多蒙他好心等候。
It was silly of you to believe him. 你相信他是愚蠢的。
It was foolish of me to forget. 我真蠢，竟然忘記了。
It’s unfair of him to criticize me. 他批評我是不公平的。
It was generous of him to pay us. 他付了我們錢，真慷慨。
It was selfish of him not to contribute anything. 他很自私什麼也不捐。
It was careless of you to leave your camera in the taxi. 你把照相機留在計程車裏實在太不小心了。
