1 . but 但是
The sweater is nice , but it's too small .
They want to go there , but I don't .

〖 點撥 〗but 為並列連詞，表示意思上的轉折，連接兩個並列成份，當連接兩個並列分句時，後面分句中的有些詞可省略。漢語可説“雖然……但是……”，但英語中只能説一個：though……，……。或者……，but……。試比較：
Though she was ill , she went to school . = She was ill , but she went to school .
2 . cook 烹調，煮，燒
Who will cook the lunch today ?
She will cook you a delicious meal .
I'm going to cook all day tomorrow .
〖 點撥 〗cook還作“廚師，炊事員”。不要把 cooker 當成廚師，cooker 是炊具，如爐、鍋一類。do some cooking 做飯菜。
Are you a cook ? 你是炊事員嗎 ?
My father always does some cooking at weekends . 我父親總是週末下廚。
3 . housework 家務勞動
We do a lot of housework on Sundays .
She is good at housework . 她善做家務。
〖 點撥 〗housework 為不可數名詞。前面已經學習過的homework (家庭作業) 也是不可數名詞。以後還會接觸到下面一些不可數名詞：news消息，advice建議，furniture傢俱，information信息……
4 . uncle 叔；伯；舅；姨父；姑父
Uncle Wang is watching TV .
Is Uncle Li a worker or a teacher ?
Uncle Chen , nice to see you . 陳伯伯，見到你真高興。
〖 點撥 〗一個舅an uncle。另外注意Uncle Wang“王叔叔”的英語和漢語在表達上的區別。
5 . machine 機器
What's wrong with the machine ? 這機器出了什麼毛病 ?
There is nothing wrong with the machine . 這機器沒毛病。
〖 點撥 〗a washing-machine洗衣機。a sewing-machine縫紉機。
單元詞組思維運用
1 . not…at all 一點也不，完全不
He isn't a student at all .
They can't speak Chinese at all .
〖 提示 〗not…at all 用於否定句中，起強調作用，加強語氣。請注意 not at all 在單獨使用時的意思為“不用謝”，用於回答別人表示謝意時。如：
-Thanks a lot .
-Not at all .
另外，注意不要混淆了not a little (很，非常) 和not a bit的意思。試對比：
After walking so far , I am not a little tired . 走了這麼遠的路，我很累。
Though I have walked so far , I am not a bit tired . 儘管走了那麼遠的路，我一點也不累。
2 . like + doing喜歡幹
I like swimming , but I don't like making things .
like doing sth 與 like to do sth 在意義上沒什麼區別。不過，如表示一般的行為，用 v - ing 形式居多，如表示特定的或具體的動作，用 to do 居多。如 I like swimming . ( 我喜歡游泳，指一般情況下如此 ) ；I don't like to swim today . ( 我今天不喜歡游泳。特定日期 ) 。 ( 我今天不喜歡游泳。特定日期 ) 。
3 . like a bike / plane 像自行車 ( 像飛機 )
He wants to ride the machine like a bike and fly it like a plane . 他想騎上這部機器，既能像自行車一樣駕駛，又能像飛機一樣飛行。
He speaks English like an Englishman . 他講英語就像英國人一樣。
You are like my little daughter . 你像我的小女兒。
注意 like 的動詞用法與介詞用法。

單元句型思路明晰
生活中喜歡與愛好的表達：
主 + like / likes…very much / a lot , a little . …非常 ( 有點 ) 喜歡……
I like English very much .
He likes playing basketball a lot .
They like Chinese food a little .
Do you / they like… ? 你 ( 他們 ) 喜歡…嗎 ?
Do you like to swim at this time of night ?
Does she like doing housework ?
Do they like bananas ?
I / We , You , They don't ( He / She , It doesn't ) like…at all . 我 ( 我們，你，你們，他們 ) 根本不喜歡……
She doesn't like that book at all . 她根本不喜歡那本書。

單元難點疑點釋疑
1 . a lot
a lot 意思是許多，非常。修飾動詞。例如：
We like our English teacher a lot .
They help us a lot .
2 . Mike doesn't like rice , bananas , eggs or bread . 邁克不喜歡 ( 吃 ) 米飯、香蕉、雞蛋和麪包。or 是連詞，意思是“或者”。在否定句中表示並列關係時，常用 or 連接， 把連接的部分都否定掉，而不用 and。例如：
She doesn't like reading or writing . 她不喜歡讀書和寫字。
He has no brothers or sisters . 他沒有兄弟姐妹。
3 . Uncle Wang likes making things . 王叔叔喜歡製做東西。
He wants to ride the machine like a bike - and fly it like a plane ! 他想像騎自行車那樣騎機器 -- 像駕駛飛機那樣駕駛它飛。
第一句中的 like ( 喜歡 ) 是動詞。
第二句的 like ( 像……一樣 ) 是介詞。
例如：a . I like drinking tea . 我喜歡喝茶。
b . He makes faces like a monkey . 他像猴子一樣做鬼臉。
c . Like father like son .有其父必有其子。
4 . Not today . Come back tomorrow . 現在不行，或許將來行。
這是個省略句，全句應為 It can't fly today . But it will come back tomorrow . 句中 tomorrow 指的是“將來的某一天”、“總有一天”。

Violin Lessons
“ Daddy , can I learn to play the violin ? ” young Sarah asked her father . She was always asking for things and her father was not very pleased .
“ You cost me a lot of money , Sarah , ” he said . “ First you wanted to learn horse riding , then dancing , then swimming . Now it’s the violin . ”
“ I’ll play every day , Daddy , ” Sarah said . “ I’ll try very hard . ”
“ All right , ” her father said . ” This is what I’ll pay for you to have lessons for six weeks . At the end of six weeks you must play something for me . If you play well , you can have more lessons . If you play badly , I will stop the lessons . ”
“ O . K . , Daddy , ” Sarah said . “ That is fair . ”
He soon found a good violin teacher and Sarah began her lessons . The teacher was very expensive , but her father kept his promise .
The went to the living room and said , “ I’m ready to play for you , Daddy . ”
“ Fine , Sarah , ” her father said . “ Begin . ”
She began to play . She played very badly . She made a terrible noise .
Her father had one of his friends with him , and the friend put his hands over his ears .
When Sarah finished , her father said , “ Well done , Sarah . You can have more lessons . ”
Sarah ran happily out of the room . Her father’s friend turned to him . “ You’ve spent a lot of money , but she still plays very badly , ” he aid .
“ Well , that’s true , ” her father said . “ But since she started learning the violin I’ve been able to buy five apartments in this building very cheaply . In another six weeks I’ll own the whole building ! ”

單元語法發散思維
The Present Indefinite Tense ( 一般現在時 )
前面我們已經講過一般現在時的概念及其非第三人稱單數主語的句型結構。
下面我們分三種情況來研究主語是第三人稱單數的謂語構成。
1 . 動詞 be 若主語是第三人稱單數用 is。
Tom is a boy .
2 . 動詞 have 若主語裏第三人稱單數用 has。
He has a lot of books .
3 . 行為動詞。若主語裏第三人稱單數，謂語動詞要在詞尾 + s 或 es。
He likes flying kite .
Mary gets up at 6 in the morning .
He files the kite every Sunday .
