5. 重點句型

1) When he died he left the Moonstone to his sister's daughter, in an act of revenge, passing on his bad fortune to her.

2) His move to quit smoking cigars to please her is seen by the servants as evidence that he is in love with Rachel.

3) Is it coincidence or is it the moonstone's bad luck that causes the tension and strange things that happen during the rest of the evening?

act v. Think before acting . 三思而後行

The medicine was taken for a long time, but it failed to act. .這藥服了很長時間了,但還未見效。

act /action

(1) 當action 作可數名詞時,常與act 同義。a kind act/ action 仁慈的行為

(2) 但act 多指具體的,短時的的行為或行動;action多指複雜的,持續的行為或行動。

(3) 在某些固定詞組中,如an act of cruelty (殘忍的行為),an act or war (戰爭行為),an act of mercy(仁慈的行為)等中,不能用action. 又如:take action (採取措施) 也是固定搭配。

to…degree 達到……程度

He was interested in his book to such a degree that he thought about nothing else.他對工作是如此感興趣,以至於從不想別的事情

To a certain degree he likes his job. 在某種程度上他喜歡他的工作。

Chinese fans love Yao Ming to the degree that they will try to watch any match that Yao Ming competes in.

as 用法

(1) 像……一樣He doesn't like skating as much as he used to.他不像以前那麼喜歡滑冰了。

(2) 照……方式I have told the story just as it happened.我已如實講了這件事。

(3) 因為,既然 As you object, I’ll reconsider the plan. 既然你反對,我就重新考慮一下這個計劃。

(4) 雖然 Much as I like the book, I can't afford to buy it.

whoever/ no matter who

(1) whoever 既可引導名詞性從句,又可引導讓步狀語從句。

Give the book to whoever (=anyone who) would like to read it.(whoever在從句中作主語)

Give the book to whomever (=anyone whom) you like. (whomever 在從句中作賓語)

Whoever comes to the meeting will be welcome. =Anyone who comes to the meeting will be welcome.

Whoever comes to the meeting, he will be welcome. =No matter who comes to the meeting, he will be welcome.

(2). no matter who 只能引導狀語從句。No matter who you are, you can't go without permission.

considerate adj.體貼的 (of, to, toward )+ n.

Franklin is very considerate toward Rachel.

1) consideration n.考慮,研究,深思

under ~ 正在考慮中

in ~ of 考慮到…,顧及…

on no ~ 決不…

2) considerable adj.相當多的,相當大的

3) consider sb./sth. as sth. 視某人(物)為He is considered a weak leader.

investigate vt. 調查,偵查investigation n. 調查,探究investigative adj. 調查的,

偵查的,審查的investigator n. 偵查員, 調查者

remark n.& vt. 評論,評述

Her absence of hair could hardly escape remark.

她的脱髮無法迴避他人的議論。

1)當remark 做及物動詞表示“注意、説到”時,常接賓語從句或名詞;表示“評論”時,常用於 remark on(upon) sb. / sth.

It was rude to remark to his/her appearance. 對別人品頭論足是不禮貌的。

2)remarkable adj. 引人注目的,突出的, 不平常的

She is a woman of remarkable imagination.

in an act of …性質的

in the act of 正在…動作時,當場在…的

He was caught in the act of pickpocket(扒竊).

astonish (1) vt. 使驚訝,使驚愕常用於被動語態,不用於進行時

The news astonished everybody. 這消息令大家驚訝。

(2) vi. 被…驚訝I was astonished at/to hear the loud sound.

adj. 驚訝的 astonished adj. 令人驚訝的 astonishing n. 驚奇,驚愕 astonishment

to one’s astonishment 令人感到驚訝的是…

To my astonishment, the dog jumped at me suddenly.

guilty adj. (1)有罪的,犯…罪的

(2)犯過失的 (of + n.)

(3)自覺有罪的,自知有過錯的,內疚的(about/over/for/of + n.)

He was found guilty. 他被判有罪。

I was guilty of a slip of memory. 我記錯了。

I feel guilty about having told a lie. 我説了謊話而感到內疚。

may 表示推測,“或許,可能”常用於肯定句中,may+動詞原形表示對現在的情況進行推測。 It may rain tomorrow.

may not + v. 表示“可能不” can not + v. 表示“不可能”

may/must+can’t+have+done 表示對過去發生的事情的推測

He may have gone home. 他可能已經回家了。

innocent (1) adj. 無罪的,清白的

(2) adj. 無邪的,天真爛漫的as innocent as baby 像嬰兒般天真

(3) n. innocence 無辜 His friends proved his innocence.

erate (1)adj. (for+n.) 對…渴望 ,(to do)要做…(不置於名詞前)

adj.不顧一切的,亡命的He was desperate for fame. 他極度渴望成名。

have no choice but…除…之外別無選擇

but是個介詞,作“除了”解, 後面跟動詞的不定式。

We had no choice but to wait.

comfort vt.安慰(某人)comfort a dying man安慰垂死的人

The child ran to his mother to be comforted.那個孩子跑到母親身邊以求得到安慰。

comfortable adj. 適合的,令人安逸的,舒適的a comfortable bed 舒適的牀

The patient was comfortable after his operation.病人手術後非常安逸。

curse vt.(1)詛咒

The witchdoctor cursed him,his son and his grandson.巫師詛咒他、他兒子和他孫子。

She cursed him for ruining her life.她詛咒他破壞了她的生活。

(2)be cursed with 因……而遭殃,因……而受苦

She was cursed with stammer all her life.她一生受口吃之苦。

stubborn adj.(1)固執的,頑固的,倔強的

He is a stubborn boy who won’t obey his mother.他是一個固執的孩子,他不會聽母親的話的。

Tom is stubborn in accepting new things.湯姆不容易接受新鮮事物。

2)不靈活的,難以改變的

The lock is rather stubborn; it needs oiling.這把鎖相當難開它需要加油了。

pretend vt.& vi.假裝,佯裝

She wasn’t really crying;she was only pretending.她不是真哭,只是在假裝。

She pretended to be reading when her mother came in.當母親進來的時候,她假裝正在讀書
