1、die off 相繼死去。
When their goats and sheep and cows died off, they came to Kabul.當山羊、綿羊和耕牛紛紛死去，他們便只好來到喀布爾。
2、take to
①開始從事(某種職業、業務等)。
Our factory has taken to making children's boots.我們廠開始生產童靴。
He left the medical profession and took to journalism.他離開了醫學界，開始從事新聞工作。
②養成(某種習慣)；嗜好…；耽於…，沉湎於…，沉迷於…：
His sister took to knitting in her spare time.他妹妹在空閒時打毛線。
3、wound up很緊張的.; 生氣的。
If someone is wound up, they are very tense and nervous or angry.
“My caddie got so wound up I had to calm him down,” Lancaster said.“我的球童很緊張，我不得不去安撫他，”蘭開斯特説。
4、race through 匆忙地做(一件事)。
This chapter is very important, you mustn't race through it.這一章很重要，千萬不要了了草草地看一遍就算了。
5、cut sb off把電話掛掉；打斷某人説話。
Zalmai cut her off and said to turn the ambulance around, so the front grille faced him, and, when she did, he said he wanted his basketball again.察爾邁伊打斷了她的話頭，要她把救護車掉個頭，以便讓車頭對着他。等到瑪麗雅姆這麼做之後，他又説他想要籃球了。
Part 2 Summary
The war launched by drought has caused the people untold suffering. To eke out a living, Mairam, Laila, and Rasheed sell eveything. Rasheed gets fired and gives vent to his anger by maltreating Mariam and Laila. When the money runs out, hunger begin to cast a pall over their lives. Death from starvation becomes a distinct possibility.
Mariam is pushed to the wall and calls her father Jalil for help. Yet Jalil died years ago, back in 1987. Aziza is sent to a orphanage where has rice and bread and water. Laila is heartbroken but powerless, sacrificing everthing to visit her daughter as often as she can. One day, when she comes back from visiting, a man at the front door of the house surprises her. Beyond expectation, this man is no-one but Tariq.
Part 3 Reflections
人的一生太短暫了，歷經總總磨難，沒想到還能和你相遇。Laila和Tariq的愛情，純真，直接，牢固，永恆。
想到《半生緣》裏，曼楨和世鈞久別重逢後説的那句話：“我們再也回不去了！”心裏忽然嚐到眼淚那鹹鹼的澀味。Laia和Tariq在這個亂世裏，還能回得去嗎？
