1. 引導時間狀語，解釋為“當...的時候”。

2. 引導讓步狀語從句，意思是“雖然…但是…”。

這種情況，while 多放於句首

（1）While there was no conclusive evidence, most people thought he was guilty.

雖然沒有確鑿的證據，大多數人還是認為他有罪。

（2）While my heart is willing, my flesh is weak.

心有餘而力不足。（雖然我的心是願意的，但是我的肉體是虛弱的）。

3. 引導條件狀語，意思是“只要”。

（1）While there is life there is hope.

留得青山在，不怕沒柴燒。（只要有命在，就有希望。）

（2）While there is a will, there is a way.

有志者事竟成。（只要有意志力，就有道路。）
